- 1). Wait for the ideal conditions to spray mesquite tree foliage. Spray the mesquite from spring to fall when the leaves have turned dark green and the soil is at least 75 degrees Fahrenheit at a depth of 12 to 18 inches. Spray during dry weather on a day with little to no wind.
- 2). Mix water with the herbicides tripclopyr and clopyralid at a concentration of 0.5 percent each. If you have a 3-gallon tank, use 2 oz. of each herbicide. A 14-gallon tank requires 9 oz. of each herbicide, and a 25-gallon tank requires 16 oz. of each.
- 3). Add the mixture to your tank sprayer. Use a backpack sprayer for dense mesquite growth or a sprayer mounted on an ATV for very large areas of mesquite. A sprayer with a cone nozzle is helpful for reaching the top foliage of the trees.
- 4). Spray the foliage on each mesquite tree evenly so that the leaves are thoroughly wet, but not dripping. Walk around each tree while spraying to ensure even coverage.
