There is no need for the use and maintenance of your hot water heater to be expensive. You can save money and energy by doing combination of things, such as using less water, using energy-efficient appliances and lowering the thermostat. - If you have an older water heater, buy an energy-efficient tank. Review hot water heaters displaying the Energy Star label in the following classifications: high-efficiency gas non-condensing, electric heat pump, solar, gas tankless and gas condensing. For example, solar-powered units are eco-friendly and mount to the roof of your home. In addition, purchase an Energy Star dishwasher and washing machine to decrease hot water usage.
- Proper insulation will help you save energy and money. Insulate your oil or natural gas hot water heater, but do not cover the top, bottom, burner section or thermostat. If you have an electric hot water heater, do not cover the thermostat. Refer to the manufacturer's recommendations or get a professional to help if you are unsure how to insulate the hot water heater properly. In addition, the water heater's hot and cold water connections should have at least the first six feet covered with insulation.
- Hot water heaters can collect sediments hindering heat transfer and reducing the tank's efficiency. Therefore, every three months drain at least a quart of water from your hot water heater to get rid of the sediment buildup. Since every hot water tank is different, follow the manufacture's instructions to drain your tank.
- Turn your water temperature down. Typically, when you purchase a hot water heater, the manufacturer sets the temperature too high. However, you can reset the temperature to 120 degrees Fahrenheit, which offers a comfortable setting for water usage.
- By quickly repairing a dripping faucet you can prevent wasting gallons of water.
Rather than taking a bath, take a shower. If you can take a shower in under 10 minutes, you can possibly use about 10 to 15 gallons of water, which is approximately half the bath water used.
Also, invest in a low-flow shower head, which can save water and heat. Check the amount of time it takes to fill a bucket of water in your shower. If the water reaches one gallon in less than 20 seconds, you should install a low-flow shower head.
