Home Security - What You Need to Know

When designing your home security system the most important thing to take into consideration is; "Do you want to stop the bad guy on the inside of your home or the outside?" It is a pretty straight forward question but makes a world of difference on how your security system is designed.
There are two types of home security systems, perimeter and interior.
A perimeter system will detect the intruder on the outside perimeter of your home, while an interior system will detect an intruder in your home.
The obvious question would be, "Why would you want to wait and detect the intruder on the inside of your home?" The answer is simple, cost.
The least expensive security system is one which uses motion sensors to detect the intruder in your home.
It obviously offers the least amount of protection.
If your alarm goes off at 1:00am do you want to know that he is in the house or outside the house? If he is in the house is he going to make a dash for the master bedroom or for the door? There are three reasons to design an interior system.
  • Cost - An interior system is the cheapest system to design.
My motto is the security system you can afford is better than the one you can't afford and never gets installed.
  • A second home where property protection is your main objective.
If you just want to make sure someone doesn't take up residence in your vacation home then an interior designed system is a good option.
  • An inexperienced salesmen that doesn't know how to design a security system and thinks a security system only takes 3 doors and a motion sensor because that is how it comes packaged.
Believe it or not, that is the most common reason I've encountered interior designed systems in the Scranton area.
The best home security system is one designed to protect the perimeter from being breached.
Once an intruder attempts to break in the alarm should sound instantly leaving him on the outside of your home with really only one option, that being to flee.
I have seen a lot of perimeter security systems fall far short of accomplishing the above goal.
Different styles of windows need different devices to prevent intrusion.
Most security consultants, at least in the Scranton area, use a cookie cutter approach and use a window contact on every type of window.
Some windows, like casement windows that crank out, are more likely to be broken then to be opened so a window contact would do little good.
A good perimeter home security system should incorporate door contacts, window contact, barrier bars, glass break sensors, and motion sensors.
Knowing when to use which device is the advantage of an experienced security consultant.
That is the difference between a security salesman and a security consultant.
Because every entry point requires a security device the cost of your system can add up quickly.
Many customers choose to protect the most vulnerable entry points while leaving less vulnerable points unprotected, allowing them to save money, but still providing a high level of security.
This is where an experienced security consultant can give you valuable input.
a home security system is all about what level of protection you can afford or are willing to spend.
I've had customers spend over $10,000 on security systems and others pay $99, it is important that a homeowner know how secure their home is so that they can make an educated decision.
You obviously can't get the same level of security with a $99 system as with a $10,000 system, but when that is all you can afford it is a whole lot better than no system at all.
You should be able to buy a relatively secure system starting at about $600 - $1500.
The decision you have to make is what level of protection do you require for your family.
