How to Take Care of a Pregnant Horse?

If you have no experience in breeding a horse, you may wonder how long does it take for a pregnant horse to give birth? Normally, a pregnant horse will carry its baby inside the stomach for around 11 months or 340 in days.
The baby of a horse is called a foal.
The male foal is known as colt whereas the female foal is called filly.
Premature foals can be born as well but you really need to take a good care of it in order for the foals to survive.
Horse pregnancy may be troublesome if you do not have any experience but this article will outline things you need to do when you have pregnant horses with you.
First of all, do some research on the nutrition need for pregnant mare.
Just like human, they are not allowed to simply consume food that brings harm to the foals.
In fact you do not have to monitor them all the time but just feed them with the appropriate food.
Make sure that their servings are rich in protein and calcium.
Not to miss other important minerals like vitamins and phosphorous.
Next, get your mare an enough spare for exercise.
A narrow living space for the mare will only make her uncomfortable and it will affect the foal.
Get a paddock which is large enough for the mare to exercise with other supplies like food, water and shelter for proper living environment.
Besides that, you should study the symptoms of giving birth.
This is important so that you can prepare to deliver the foals.
You should notice that a week before giving birth, her udder will increase into a bigger size.
Then a few days before the foal is born, the position of foal will be back to its born position.
The mare's teats will become waxy a few hours before giving birth and that is when you need to get ready.
