Definition:
A ventriculoperitoneal shunt, or VP shunt, is a surgical procedure used to treat hydrocephalus. In a VP shunt, a small tube is passed from the ventricles in the brain into the abdominal cavity. The tube drains excess cerebrospinal fluid out of the ventricles of the brain and into the belly, where it is easily reabsorbed by the body.
