- 1). Weigh dry dog food using a scale. Since dry dog food consists of numerous pieces that can be messy to weigh at one time, find a plastic container to hold the food in, such as a clean take-out container.
- 2). Weigh the empty container first and write down its weight. Depending on the manufacturer of the scale, some measure to the nearest fraction of an ounce or whole grams. Use the increment with which you are most familiar.
- 3). Pour some of the dry dog food into the container and write down the resulting weight.
- 4). Subtract the weight of the dog food and container from the weight of the container. This result is the weight of the dog food.
- 5). Purchase a measuring cup at a grocery or department store for a quick way to calculate dry dog food weight. Pour dry dog food into the cup until it is level with the eight ounce mark. The eight ounce mark is a good standard to use since this is what pet food manufacturers base caloric intake on. You will know the exact weight of the food you are feeding your dog.
