How do you train your dog to fetch [http://www.dog-obedience-training-online.com] Well its actually quite easy if you know how. Here are the main steps.
- One of the best methods is to use two toys as a bait and switch - this is known as the bait and switch routine.
- This is what you do...The toys MUST be identical in every way and a toy that your dog really enjoys to play with and is known to your dog.
- Start by placing your dog on a halter or on a leash.
- Then hide one of the toys on you and throw the other one a short distance - after you have shown it to your dog
- Then you need to release your dog from it's leash and say "fetch" loudly and firmly. You don't have to use "fetch" as your cue word but for the purpose of this I am assuming you will.
- When your dog starts to return with the first toy (the one thrown) then produce the hidden one.
- Your dog will more than likely drop the toy he is carrying in favor of the new toy you are holding.
-At this point attach your dog to his lead and then throw the new toy.
-After throwing the new toy this is the point you say "fetch".
-When your dog is chasing the new toy go and run after the first toy (your dog would have lost interest in the first toy)
- Repeat this process several times until you feel your dog is starting to understand the process.
If your dog is not motivated by toys, try adding some meaty spread or something that WILL motivate him-use a treat.
