What is Lock Bumping?
Lock bumping is a fairly new technique which is used to unlock euro profile cylinders. You would commonly find euro locks on UPVC doors, composite doors and some wooden doors. Lock bumping is becoming more common in burglaries because of its simplicity. This technique can be very effective if done properly and can take just a few seconds for a thieve to break into your home or business. When you are the victim of a lock bumping burglary it can mean you are not paid out by your insurance company because it leaves little to no trace of a break in, it does no damage at all to the cylinder and can easily be mistaken by insurance company's as the door been left open and never locked in the first place which would sometimes void any contents insurance you have.
How does lock bumping work?
Lock bumping works by using something called a bump key. When the key is inserted into a lock and struck with another object it manipulates the insides of the lock barrel in such a way that the lock can be opened as if the correct key had been used. Bump keys can be readily bought online or can be easily made at home using basic hand tools and a key blank, this is part of the reason lock bumping is becoming more common. We cannot go into more detail about how Lock Bumping works because we are trying to spread awareness but at the same time we do not want to give tips to burglars.
How to prevent your lock being bumped
To combat lock bumping there are two techniques. There is a formula available that can be squirted inside your existing lock barrels which is designed to decrease movement inside the lock when somebody attempts to bump it.
