- Willys had been producing trucks and utility vehicles for several years, and in 1956 the company announced the "Forward Control" truck, which was a revolutionary design that continued in production until 1967.
- The forward control vehicle was one in which the driver sat directly above the front wheels. This allowed maximum cargo space. The engine was also at least partially under the driver. The truck was called the Jeep FC-150.
- Also new for this vehicle was the ability to shift into four-wheel drive without stopping the vehicle, which was new technology at the time. With the driver higher on the vehicle, visibility was also increased.
- The FC-150 was designed primarily as a work truck. The chassis was used for fire trucks, dump trucks and tow trucks in addition to regular usage as a standard pickup.
