Riding a motorcycle can become an obsession, more like a cult. You get dedicated to it so much that it becomes your only way of life. I am not talking about riders clubs hard cores, but about an average person; you and me! Have you ever realized that we get so carried away by riding adventures that we forget to follow road safety rules? Well, here is a reminder:
Wear full protective suit-jeans are not protective
If you do not have one, buy! A full protective gear is the difference between a torn suit and a skin graft. I recently saw a motorcycle accident survivor whose only hope of being under the sun again was a skin graft. You guessed right, he was wearing jeans. Jeans are cool but they will not protect you in case of an accident.
Wear good quality helmet
Check with your dealer or gear traders for good quality helmets, I am certain they are there. Alternatively, buy well renowned gear brands. If not, ask around. There must be a motorcycle community near you. If all this does not work, check out the various forums and blogs on the internet. I am sure you will land on one along the way.
Wear reflective coats- France recommends yellow arm bands
Now, reflective coats are like a lighthouse in the ocean. Incoming!!!! That is what they scream. And yes, you need that on the road; something to signal your presence.
Wear an LED lighted helmet at night
This can mean the difference between life and death. Once darkness falls, you never know what waylays you in the dark. The market is awash with these led-lit helmets, get one or otherwise improvise.
Focus on the road - do not look down
When you are on the road, you need to keep your eyes focused on where you are going. Not anywhere else. Well, there are occasional hind-sights but that should be done with the aid of your side mirrors. Do not turn your head. Do not look down too. Stay focused.
Drive at the recommended speed - all highways have speed limits, stick to them
I know motorcycle riders get tempted to drive at breakneck speed; however I doubt if you take a second to think about the repercussions. Do not ignore these speed limits.
Do not drive too close to cars; do not let your vision be obscured by the driver in front of you
Driving right behind a car will obscure your vision on what is happening ahead of you. Ride slightly away but be on your lane. Driving too close to the car ahead of you limits your chances of breaking in case of an emergency.
Always keep your lights on, day or night
This is very important. It is actually a rule.
Do not drink and drive it is not a clich
Drinking and driving are parallel. They do not go hand in hand. If you know you will be inebriated, take a cab home. Otherwise, you will not only be endangering your life but the lives of other road users as well.
Stunting on the highway? I do not think so
Stunts are fun and adventurous, but they should be done under controlled environments. So if you were thinking of pulling a first one on other motorists, just forget it. It might land you either in jail or a morgue.
So there you are; the ten easy-to-remember tips that will reduce avoidable accidents on the road. Be focused, be visible on the road and protect yourself with good quality gear.
