- Specialty paints make it possible to give walls a shimmery finish. While the paints vary by manufacturer, they generally roll or brush on just as traditional wall paints do. However, some do require a special high-nap roller for best results. These shimmery paints come in a variety of finishes. Some contain tiny flecks of metal or mica for a metallic finish, while others have a more subtle pearly finish. Another option is to paint walls with traditional paint, then add a coat of clear glitter glaze. This paint is clear, so it adds some sparkle without altering the color of your walls.
- If you’d like to add pattern to the walls, consider metallic or glittery wallpaper. Because specialty wallpapers can be expensive and four walls of pattern can be overwhelming, consider covering just one or two walls in wallpaper. Don’t let expense scare you away, however, because as shiny, metallic wallpaper becomes more and more in demand, manufacturers will increase their offerings of moderately priced choices.
- Many fabrics have a shimmery appearance. Shop carefully and you may be able to find a matching bedding set and curtains that fit your shimmery theme. Satin and lame are naturally shiny and luminescent, as are some polyester chiffons. Other fabrics have metallic threads woven into them or are embellished with sequins or glittery beads. If you cannot find fabrics shimmery enough for your liking, consider adding your own sparkly embellishments, metallic trims and shiny sequins.
- While you are somewhat limited when it comes to shimmery paint, wallpaper and fabric selections, accessorizing is an area where you can really pile on the shimmer. Hang a chandelier dripping with faceted crystals, and cover picture frames with glitter, faux jewels or sequins. Hang a beaded curtain in the doorway, cover a lampshade in jewels, and hang holographic posters on the walls. Don’t forget a spinning disco ball covered in tiny mirrors.
