- 1). Measure the windows. The rods should extend 2 inches beyond the window frame. To create a wider effect, plan to attach the rods 4 to 6 inches beyond the frame. Buy adjustable triple curtain rods--triple because you are hanging three layers, and adjustable so you can adapt them to the width you need for the window. Rods usually come in two to three adjustable widths. If your measurements are close to the last measurement on the shorter rods, buy the next size up.
- 2). Mark the wall for the screws. Using a metal tape measure, measure 2 inches beyond and 4 inches above the window frame. With the pencil, mark where the screws will go. Drill into each pencil marking enough to start the screw. Align the brackets with the markings and drill in the screws.
- 3). Attach the sheers first. Using the innermost rod, place the sheers on the rod and set them into the innermost position on the brackets. Adjust the sheers for an even hang, tugging on the sheers slightly if necessary.
- 4). Put up the curtains. Place the curtains on the middle rod and set them into the middle position on the brackets. Pull the curtains back, so the sheers show. The idea is to create the look of three layers.
- 5). Hang the valance. Place the valance on the outside rod and set the rod into the outside position of the bracket. Adjust the valance so it hangs evenly across the whole window. Wrap the valance around the outside corners of the brackets for a completed look.
