- "New Jersey" hair has become synonymous with the poofy hairstyles that were wildly popular in the 1980s. The hair is usually long and fluffed out to at least one inch above the head. You can achieve this poofy look on long hair by combing the hair back, then holding the hair up with your fingers and spraying each section. Add light bangs that fall to either side of the forehead. You may also choose to do tight spiral curls using L'Oreal's Pumping Curls and a small curling iron, or you can create large waves with a crimping iron for a bona fide 80s look.
- In order to make your shorter hair look like a fluffed, curly afro, you've got to have a certain type of hair grade. If your hair naturally gets bigger due to the humidity in the air, try this trick. Roll your hair with very small magnetic or flexi-rod rollers in small sections. Sit under a bonnet dryer or allow the hair to air dry for at least six hours. Then turn on the shower in your bathroom and allow steam to fill the room. Unravel the rollers and sit there for at least 20 minutes to create a filled out, afro look.
- One of the easiest ways to achieve a poofy style is with a large barreled curling iron. First, comb all of your hair upwards with a wide-toothed comb. If necessary, throw your head forward and run your hands through your hair thoroughly so that it is loose. Then, take it in medium sized sections and curl the strands with your curling iron. Allow the iron to sit for a few seconds longer than you would normally.
Curl the very top section of your hair going backward, the left section going toward the left, and vice versa for the right side. Create a bang as well if you wish. Then spray the curls with a holding spray. Use a rat-tailed comb to mold the curls while keeping them intact.
