- Smart keys enable car owners to lock and unlock doors, open the trunk and fuel filter, and raise and lower the hardtop and windows via a key fob. Depending on the manufacturer, the selection options on the fob differ in what parts of the cars they open. For example, the original had a button for only the driver's door and one for all doors.
- Cars equipped to work with smart keys have antennas in the body of the vehicle, while the fob has a radio pulse generator. The fob contains an encoded card, like a credit card, that sends an electric signal from the fob to the antennas and releases the locks as instructed.
- Some mechanical keyless locks require a code to unlock the door. These keys can be programmed to respond to one generic code for several users or individualized codes to document who is specifically accessing the car.
