- 1). Grip the head joint (the section with the blow hole) with one hand just below the hole and the body joint (the long section containing the majority of buttons) and with the other hand at a space where there are no keys and gently unscrew the head from the body. Repeat this process with the body joint and the foot joint (end of the flute). Try to grip the foot joint at the bottom to avoid touching the keys. Once completed, the flute should be in three pieces: head, body and foot.
- 2). Spray glass cleaner onto the cloth and wipe down the head joint. Gently rub the entirety of the piece with the cloth. Don't forget to wipe down the mouth plate (area around the blowhole where the musician rests his or her lower lip).
- 3). Repeat the process on the body joint, taking care when rubbing around the keys. Try to avoid touching the pads (small cushions underneath the keys), as that can damage them.
- 4). Wipe down the foot joint, making sure to avoid too much contact with the keys--they are particularly vulnerable on this joint.
- 5). Reassemble the flute by gripping the head joint with one hand and the body joint (again in the buttonless space) with the other and twisting them together until the blowhole and top of the keys are in alignment. Connect the foot to the head and body by gripping the body joint and the bottom of the foot joint and gently twisting them together so the keys in the foot and body line up.
