I'll be honest with you. You wouldn't need much of a nutshell to put January new releases into. Sure, there are some A-listers on the roster -- Springsteen, The Doors, The Beatles, David Crosby, Small Faces -- but it's going to be the typical slow start for new music in the new year.
It is 40 years now since Greetings from Asbury Park, NJ put Bruce Springsteen on the road to rock superstardom. Interestingly, you don't see E Street Band listed on the cover of Springsteen's 18th studio album, High Hopes, but various members in various configurations are featured on practically every song, including Clarence Clemons, who died in 2011 and Danny Federici, who passed away in 2008. In the pre-release publicity, Springsteen called High Hopes "some of our best unreleased material from the past decade."

David Crosby's catalog is heaviest with his recordings as a member of The Byrds and Crosby, Stills & Nash. Crosby also has a body of solo work that began in 1971 with If Only I Could Remember My Name and continues in 2014 with Croz, his 12th solo studio album release. Collaborators (aka guest artists) include Mark Knopfler and Winston Marsalis,

As the title implies, what we see here is The Doors' career as it begins, and grows into what has become classic rock legend. R-Evolution is a fascinating look at the evolution of the band, documented chronologically through TV and film appearances, a good bit of it previously unreleased.
The storyboard starts in 1966, with the band's performance in a Ford Motor Company training film. It proceeds through appearances on TV shows like American Bandstand and The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, and on into music video and concert film appearances over which the band (rather then the TV networks) had creative control. R-Evolution will be available in DVD, Blu-ray and digital video formats 1/21/14.

Back in the day, it was common practice for British bands to release different versions of their albums the U.K. and the US. The American versions released between 1964 and 1970 are included in this set, with CD sleeve cover art and track lists that match the original vinyl releases. The 13-CD box set will be available 1/21/14.
Small Faces - Here Come the Nice
Small Faces - Here Come the Nice is a collection of the band's releases on the Immediate Records label, 1967-69. The 8-CD set (four albums plus four Extended Plays) includes a hardbound coffee table book among a generous selection of memorabilia that accompanies the music. Amazon Exclusive box set available 1/28/14.
Blood Sweat & Tears - The Complete Columbia Singles
During the years BS&T recorded for Columbia Records (1968-1976) there were 16 singles released from their nine studio albums. In this new package all 16 (including B-sides, for a total of 32 tracks) in chronological order, have been remastered. It's a great audio map of the band's evolution from beginning to (almost) the end of their career. The 2-CD set is available 1/7/14.
