After releasing their previous CD on a major label, Shadows Fall have formed their own label, Everblack Industries, to release Retribution. The band’s sixth studio album was produced by Zeuss (Hatebreed, Chimaira), who handled production duties on several of their previous albums. The vocals were produced by Michael “Elvis” Baskette.
Shadows Fall has always mixed melody and intensity very well, and they continue that on Retribution.
It’s a little harder edged and technical than Threads Of Life, combining thrash, metalcore and good old American metal. “Still I Rise” is the first single, and for good reason. It has great melodies and hooks, but also some punishing moments.
“War” is an angry and intense thrasher, with galloping riffs and passionate shouting vocals, plus a couple nice guitar solos. “King Of Nothing” amps up the brutality factor with guest vocals from Lamb Of God’s Randy Blythe. His instantly recognizable snarl adds an edge to the proceedings, although there are also some nice harmonies.
Things lighten up a bit with “Picture Perfect,” a melodic mid-tempo song that alternates crooning and harder edged singing. Many artists front load their albums with the strongest songs first, but Shadows Fall saves a couple good ones for the end, wrapping up with “A Public Execution” and “Dead And Gone.”
It’s no coincidence Brian Fair has stepped up his vocal performance while working with Baskette. His harsh vocals are emotional and powerful, while his melodic singing is on point.
The background vocals and harmonies are also very good. Guitarists Jonathan Donais and Matt Bachand also step up their game with several songs showcasing their chops.
Jason Bittner is one of the best in the business, and whether it’s standing out with pummeling blast beats or blending in subtle fills, he always comes through. Bassist Paul Romanko also delivers a rock solid performance. Retribution is a strong return to form by Shadows Fall. There’s little filler among the 10 tracks, and there’s a considerable amount of variety.
