How to Care for a Plantain Tree

    • 1). Prepare the soil at a site with good drainage and high fertility. Till the soil, clearing away any weeds, with either a hoe or a rototiller. Dig a hole and plant the plantain seedling at a depth equal to where it resided in its pot.

    • 2). Water the plantain deeply. Keep the soil consistently moist until the plant starts growing vigorously on its own. After that point, the plantain needs 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week, whether that is through rain or manual watering.

    • 3). Lay down 2 to 3 inches of mulch around the base of the plantain plant. Do not let the mulch touch the trees. Clear away all weeds 2 to 6 feet from the base of the plant so the plantain does not need to compete with them for nutrients.

    • 4). Fertilize the plantain plant with a fertilizer marked 6-2-12 every two months. Follow the directions on the package for application instructions as each brand will differ. Increase the amount of fertilizer slightly at flowering and fruiting time to give the tree an extra boost.

    • 5). Prune the plantains for best fruiting. Leave the mother plant and the next sucker that grows alone. Cut all suckers that appear after that down to the ground.
