- 1). Plant your butterfly bush in an ideal location. Buddleja davidii thrives in a range of conditions but must have well-drained soil, ideally with a pH between a 6.0 and 7.0, and full sunlight.
- 2). Prune the butterfly bush to within 1 foot of the ground in the early spring. This process creates the opportunity for new growth on which flowers bloom. Avoid pruning in winter or fall, which can increase the risk of damage from the cold.
- 3). Deadhead old blooms once they turn brown or start to wither. Snip the old bloom off where it meets the stem with scissors. This helps to prolong the blooming season by stimulating new bud growth. Blooms flower from June through October and peak in flower production between July and August.
