Exploring the Chicago area is best done on foot, but during the summer months, Chicago has trolley rides that leave from the downtown area. If you are in Chicago and have time to spare, consider a ride on the trolley and a tour of the sights along the routes. Public attractions in and around Chicago include those that can be seen for free as well as those that require a fee. - Navy Pier is a place that has something for everyone including cruise and boat rides, entertainment, attractions and rides. Beginning in the last week of June and through Labor Day, the Navy Pier has fireworks displays on designated nights. During this time of year between spring and fall, the Navy Pier presents theater productions, Cirque Shanghai acrobats, and also many free shows including music and dance concerts. The Patch’s Children’s Village provides activities for children of varying age groups. Kids can have an extreme pirate makeover or participate in the extreme trail ropes course on a simulated 100-foot mast and deck of a maritime pirate ship.

navypier.com - The Skydeck is located on the 103rd floor of the Willis Tower (formerly knows as the Sears Tower) building in downtown Chicago. The view from this deck allows you to see views of Indiana, Wisconsin and the greater Chicago area. On a clear day, you can see 40 to 50 miles in any direction. The Willis Tower took three years to build and opened in 1973. It is considered the tallest building in the United States with 110 floors. If you want to visit the Skydeck with little or no wait times, the best time to go is after 5 p.m.
