- 1). Get your semester grades in letter form, such as A, B, C, etc. You might also receive more specific grades such as A-- or B+.
- 2). Assign a number to each letter grade. An A equals 4.0, a B equals 3.0, a C 2.0 and a D 1.0. Pluses and minuses are worth more and less: A-- is 3.7, B+ is 3.3, B-- is 2.7, C+ is 2.3, C-- is 1.7, D+ is 1.3 and D-- is 0.7. Any Fs equal 0.
- 3). Multiply each grade number by the number of credits for that class. For example, a four-credit class in which you earned an A would equal 4.0 times four, or 16.0. Add together all the grade numbers you earned.
- 4). Take the sum of the products of the grade numbers and divide it by the total number of credits you earned during the semester. This will give you your semester grade point average.
