- The biggest problem with Buick Rainiers is the electrical system. Flashers need to be replaced if turn signals stay on, and the ABS indicator may illuminate due to a poor electrical ground for the electronic brake control module.
Other electrical problems involve the OnStar system--a combination of communications, security, navigation and diagnostic services exclusively installed in GM vehicles. In some cases, the GPS system may lose precision due to either window tinting or objects placed on the shelf if the antenna is placed in the same area. In other cases, the system may quit or won't power on. The fuse can be removed for five minutes, then put back in its original place to temporarily solve the problem; the communications interface module would need to be replaced. - In some 2004 Buick Rainiers, the gas tank may be hard to fill due to the nozzle clicking off or gas spitting out; the filler pipe would need to be replaced. In other cases, problems may occur with the fuel gauge. This can manifest itself in two ways: either the engine stalls or fails to start due to the tank being empty, even though the gauge shows fuel remaining; or the gauge would fail to register the refilling of the gas tank. Fuel system cleaner can be applied to treat possible sulfur corrosion, but if the problem persists, the fuel sender would need to be replaced.
- Tail and brake lights in some 2004 Rainiers may quit working. New circuit boards can be installed under warranty for up to 6 years/72,000 miles.
- Some 2004 and 2005 Buick Rainiers with 4.2-liter six-cylinder engines may suffer from water leaks into the transmission, requiring replacement of the rusty dipstick tube.
- Some 2004 Rainier windshield wipers may tend to underperform. This can be fixed by replacement with a revised wiper arm.
- Some 2006 Buick Rainiers may have their ignition switches fail. This would prevent the vehicle from starting, and/or it can cause the brake and traction indicators to illuminate.
- Some Buick Rainiers with 4.2-liter six-cylinder engines may experience the failure of the air management system. To repair it, the dealer may need to replace any of several components that include the air pump, oxygen sensor and air solenoid.
