- 1). Choose the location of the outdoor room and mark the space with wooden stakes. Run string from each stake to lay out the boundaries. Make note of how much area is in the sunlight and how much is in the shade.
- 2). Measure the area and transfer the shape, along with measurements, to graph paper. Use a scale of one block equals 1 square foot of space. Draw in any features already in place, such as a fountain, shed or flower bed. Remember to draw to scale for a better perspective.
- 3). Select the features you want for the outdoor room. For instance, do you want an outdoor fireplace or just a small fire pit? Use spray paint to mark where you want certain features. Also mark the spaces for furniture. Keep the size in perspective when drawing the outlines.
- 4). Calculate the needed material for any walls or specific borders. For a more open feeling, lattice is easily erected to form walls. The lattice also works well for hanging outdoor artwork and plants. You may prefer sandstone to create a low wall for an outer edge. Large pieces of sandstone are popular for use as seating or short tables.
- 5). Compare the cost of materials and construction to the funds in your budget. Adjust the plans or the budget accordingly. If your budget does not include funding all the amenities, consider adding the most important ones first and add others the following year.
