Since its debut in 1964, the Ford Mustang has evolved into a highly recognized brand, inspiring a new class of "pony" sports cars and the formation of Mustang-exclusive clubs. In 1989, the Mustang was produced with eight different trims and featured few significant upgrades over the previous year. The two GT trims released in 1989 featured either a hatchback or convertible design and were some of the most expensive trims, retailing for $13,272 and $17,512, respectively. - 1989 Mustang GTs come in a variety of colors, including Oxford White, Deep Shadow Blue Metallic, Dark Grey Metallic, and the famous bright red. Inside, consumers can choose from Medium Grey, Beige, or Scarlet Red colors. Other interior options included leather accents, power windows/locks, remote mirrors, cruise control, rear defroster, air-conditioning, and AM/FM stereo with a cassette player.
- Though there were two engine options for 1989 Mustangs, both GT trims came equipped with a 4.9-liter V-8 engine standard. This engine featured a displacement of 4,949 cc (302 cubic inches), a bore and stroke of 4 by 3 inches, and a compression ratio of 9-to-1. It had a net power of 225 horsepower and a torque of 200 foot-pounds.
- Both the GT hatchback and the GT convertible came equipped with a five-speed, manual-overdrive transmission standard, though an optional four-speed automatic was also available. The standard five-speed, paired with the GT trim's standard 4.9-liter engine, was capable of 17 miles per gallon (mpg) in the city and 24 mpg on highways.
- Inside, the '89 GT hatchback had 37 inches of headroom/41.7 inches of legroom up front and 35.7 inches of headroom/30.7 inches of legroom in the back. The GT convertible had slightly different amounts of space, with 37.6 inches of headroom/41.7 inches of legroom up front and 36.9 inches of headroom/30.7 inches of legroom in the rear.
- Both the hatchback and convertible GT trims had two doors and could seat up to five adults. Both trims also had the same dimensions, measuring 179.6 inches in length, 69.1 in width, and 52.1 inches in height. The wheelbase was 100.5 inches, the front track measured 56.60 inches, and the rear track measured 57 inches for trims. The hatchback had a curb weight of 3,194 lbs., while the convertible weighed 3,333 lbs.
