- 1). Know that garnet is not only deep red. You can find garnet in shades of pink, orange, green, yellow, purple, brown, black, and even without color.
- 2). Look to see if your stone changes its color in both natural and artificial light. If it does, you might have found the extremely rare star garnet that produces "streaks" or "rays" that gleam with light. These stones are mostly found in Idaho and parts of India.
- 3). Test the gemstone's hardness. On the Mohs Scale, its hardness is around 7 to 7.5. For more information about the Mohs scale, see below under "Resources."
- 4). Check the shape of the raw crystals that make up a garnet's composition. It should have a roundish shape.
