- 1). Measure from the top of your valance rod to the top of the window inside the frame. Add 4 inches to the measurement. This will be the finished length of your valance. This allows 2 inches for a "ruffle" at the top of the rod and 2 inches to hang below the window frame. If you have not yet hung your valance rod, 18 inches is a good length for a valance.
- 2). Measure the width of your window and and add 6 inches. Double this measurement to determine the finished width of your valance.
- 3). Add 1 1/4 inches to the calculated length to determine the length of the fabric panels you will need. This allows for two 5/8-inch seam allowances.
- 4). Divide the width of your finished valance by the width of your fabric, to determine the number of lengths of fabric you will need. You may ignore seam allowances when calculating this number.
- 5). Multiply the number of lengths by the length you calculated earlier. This is the number of yards of fabric you will need. Purchase the same amount of lining fabric.
