The new HTC Desire Z looks set to go head to head with the Motorola Milestone 2 for the crown of best Android handset with a physical keypad. These handsets are very few and far between, and this latest offering from HTC looks set to become a hit with users everywhere.
The HTC Desire Z is a large handset. With a 3.7" screen and a physical keypad neatly tucked away behind the screen, this model was never going to win any awards for its compactness. At 119 x 60.4 x 14.2mm, the device does still manage to remain pocketable, and at 180 grammes in weight, it feels well built but not excessively heavy, despite being toward the top end of the weight spectrum. The handsets keyboard arcs from beneath the screen, and when this is in use the keys seem well spaced out and respond very well. The phones display is on a par with the very best handsets currently available. At 480 x 800 pixels resolution, the screen shows a superb level of picture quality, whether you are viewing web pages or your own captured media. Colours are rich and vivid thanks to the phone being able to display up to 16 million. In terms of responsiveness, the capacitive touch panel once again performs admirably, and there is even the option of using the additional optical trackpad for more precise navigation. An accelerometer chip is installed behind the screen performing the essential auto rotate functions, even more vital when turning this unit onto its side in order to utilise the keypad.
The HTC Desire Z comes with a host of connectivity options, so regardless whether you are at home or on the move, you will always have access to a cellular data network. The vital WiFI is facilitated on this model, with all three current speeds all supported. WiFI does offer the best and the fastest online experience, however the system is rather limited in that you can only really achieve local access. A much more commonly used system is 3G, and with coverage ever increasing this is the system you will be connected to the majority of the time whilst on the move, allowing you to take advantage of the fastest possible data transfer speeds. Should you find yourself out of 3G range, then the unit offers reliable back up in the form of GPRS and EDGE. Local connectivity options are great to. Bluetooth 2.1 allows for wireless connection to compatible products, and the essential micro USB is also present for synchronisation with your home computer.
The HTC Desire Z continues the brands excellent reputation for stylish, feature packed and functional phones. The user interface is superb and the added bonus of a slide out keyboard means this phone ticks pretty much every box with regards to being the complete mobile phone.
