- 1). Power on your computer, and make sure it has the proper specs for running a copy of Photoshop CS4. Most computers and laptops that were made after 1998 are able to handle it, though. Install the copy of Photoshop, making sure to follow all of the installation guidelines, which are included with retail copies of the software.
- 2). Take your camera out and go take some pictures. Experiment with different angles and views. Practice with macro shots, as well as farsighted ones. Let your creative juices flow. Take into consideration what kind of effect you are wanting in your photograph. Take a picture of a field of wildflowers, which will make a beautiful black and white photograph to enhance.

Click OK.
Right-click the photograph that has loaded on the screen and select "Duplicate Layer." Another screen will pop up that has the new layer titled as "background." Just click "OK." - 5). Look at the bottom-right corner of your page,and you will see a window with tabs labeled for layers, channels and paths. Click the tab for "Layers" and you will see two choices--one being background and the other being background copy. Click the top choice, and it will become highlighted.
- 6). Click the image tab that is located at the top of the program applet, and from the drop-down menu that appears, click "Adjustments." From there, you click "Hue and Saturation" from the second drop-down list.

Drag the Saturation slider to the left to remove color.
Use the slider by clicking it with your mouse and dragging it to the left or to the right when the menu pops up. Do this on the middle section that is labeled for Saturation. The farther left you drag the slider, the more color will be removed from the photograph. - 8). Click the magic wand tool icon that is located on the left side of your screen directly under the icon for the lasso tool.

Magic Wand tool used on the top layer will bring the bottom layer to the top.
Use the magic wand tool to "cut" a section carefully out of the item you wish to remove from the top layer. This will remove the top layer that has been desaturated, and it will expose the bottom layer that has been untouched, making the item in the picture colored.
