Why cat grooming is very important for your pet

Most of the cats live their entire lives without getting brushed. Cat grooming is vital for good cat health. Cats do not like to be brushed. Cats are taken care of in all ways but they are rarely brushed. Grooming cats is an important part of cat care. Whether your pet cat is purebred or mixed breed, you need to take care of its eyes, ears and coat. The key to grooming is in the length of the coat.

Shedding

Cats shed and thus weekly brushing is a must. This removes dead hair that would have ended up on your sofa, floor or may be even your cup of tea. This will help your cat during hairball control. Buy a good stainless steel comb to groom your cat.

Odour

Cats are extremely clean animals. But, the cleanest of cats often need to be bathed. Unneutered male cats smell more than the neutered ones. Cats with long hair are susceptible to urine and feces getting stuck on their fur. This causes health problems for the cat like their skin might feel irritated and get infected. This also leads to bad odor. If your cat has long hair, regular grooming is necessary.

Hairballs:

Hairball is another name of undigested wet hair in the stomach. They are not in the shape of balls but sausage shaped and is formed when your pet cat swallows a lot of hair after grooming. Medical term for hair ball is "trichobezoar". It is not a pleasant experience for your cat, and long haired cats ten to have more hairballs than short haired cats. Regular grooming controls hairball population within your home. Brushing your cat a few times in a week will remove dead hair and this means less hairballs on your expensive furniture and rugs.

Your cat licks the fur, the rough tongue loosens the dead hair and thus most of the hair sticks to the tongue. But, your cat cannot spit it out. Only option left with him is to swallow it. This hair gets through the digestive tract with no problem, but sometimes there is too much hair. Sometimes hairballs are too big and make your cat sick. In some cases surgery becomes necessary to remove them.

Although this cannot be prevented, you can do some things like:

Groom your cat, brush him and wipe him down with a wet cloth. This will remove all the hair that is missed by the brush.

If the problem persists use petroleum based products as a remedy, they act as a laxative to pass the hairball.

Cat illnesses are a result of not brushing and feces sticking to the hair of your pet cat. Hair ball is also one of the problems arising from not grooming and brushing your cat.
