- 1). Gather the new vehicle's information, including the vehicle identification number (VIN) and the vehicle's lienholder or additional interest information, if the vehicle is financed or leased. Be sure that the vehicle is titled in your name or a household member, as this is required by insurance carriers.
- 2). Contact your agent or your carrier's customer service department and request to add the vehicle to your current insurance policy. Provide the representative with the VIN number, titling information and lienholder information, if applicable.
- 3). Review the current coverages with your insurance representative to ensure that those coverages still meet your needs. Increase your policy's liability limits, if desired, or maintain Montana's state minimum coverage of $25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident and $10,000 in property damage.
- 4). Add comprehensive and collision coverage to this vehicle if it is financed or leased, or if so desired. Select a deductible with both physical damage coverages. Discuss the deductible options with your insurance representative.
- 5). Obtain a vehicle inspection, as required by your insurance carrier. Complete the inspection with your insurance agent or with one of your carrier's authorized inspection agencies.
- 6). Request a temporary insurance card from your carrier while you wait for the official cards to be issued.
- 7). Secure a copy of the temporary card in the vehicle. Replace the card with the permanent insurance card once you receive it.
