    Physical Fitness and Technique

      Dedicate at least three hours a day to fitness training and basic technique. To achieve the level of fitness needed to compete at the professional tennis level, you should be spending at least one hour, three times a week working on cardio fitness, and one hour, three times a week on weight training, and two hours every day on tennis technique. At the amateur and intermediate level, these techniques of fitness training and tennis techniques can be self monitored, but as you develop as a player, you will need to hire a fitness trainer and tennis coach to guide you through more advanced levels of training.

    • 2). Speak to a sport dietian about the proper diet which you should be eating in order to achieve the most optimal body mass index, weight, and muscle level. Most professional tennis players not only are in excellent physical shape in terms of muscle tone, but also keep their body at a very specific weight level to maximize their fitness and agility on the court.

    • 3). Speak to a fitness weight trainer about developing the proper muscle mass that will optimize your on-court performance. Although it is best to speak to a professional trainer before you begin, typically professional tennis players place the most strain on their biceps/forearms (for endurance in hitting the ball), calves (for getting to the ball faster), and torso (for body control).

    Mental Training and Equipment

    • 1). Enroll in the USTA player’s membership, and sign up for challenger tournaments at the clubs around your area, once you confident in your physical fitness and technique. Gaining experience as a player in real game time situations will teach you how to deal with the demanding anxiety and mental stress that typically taxes professional players. The more tournaments you play, the more comfortable you will be in tournament situations.

      Speak to a sports psychologist to help develop the mental training you need to compete as a professional tennis player. Tennis is as much about mental toughness and fortitude as it is about physical fitness and technique. Particularly if you plan on competing as a singles player, it will take a great deal of mental training to learn how to deal with the pressures of game time situations like match points, break points and second serves.
