12. Sat Dec. 14: First American Fine Crafts Show in Brooklyn (Brooklyn Museum)
Craft aficionados can browse the collections of 90 jury-selected artists and artisans. Works will include ceramics, decorative and wearable fiber, furniture, glass, jewelry, leather, sculpture, and fine art, with many of the nation’s master craftspeople showing in New York for the first time.
The craft show entrance fee includes Museum admission. Tickets are $12 for adults, $11 for seniors, $6 for students with valid ID, and free for children under 10.More »
13. Sat-Sun, Dec 14-15: Proteus Gowanus Fair/Books and Gifts for the Brain (Gowanus)
Proteus Gowanus is the kind of place that hosts a writing group called the "Writhing Society." With their "Partner-In-Residence," Observatory, this iconoclastic outpost in Gowanus is also holding a little holiday fair. Free beer, DJ, and "lots of books and gifts" for holiday presents. Started in 2007, the now-annual Lyceum Holiday Marketplace is held in an interesting basement of an old public bathhouse-turned-venue. You'll find a wide array of handcrafted items, many made by local Brooklyn artists. This is a good place to pick up $25 and under items for kids, family members and even pets.- Where: 227 4th Avenue.
