- 1). Lift the waterproof cover on the pool's electrical switch box and turn the power off by tripping the switch.
- 2). Remove the six bolts holding the pump impeller housing to the pool strainer housing, using a socket wrench. Pull the pump assembly straight out.
- 3). Remove the end cap from the pump motor by detaching the four securing screws with a nut driver. Lift the small sheet of plastic covering the round tubular capacitor inside the motor housing. Place the tip of an insulated screwdriver against the metal capacitor and twist the handle until it almost touches the motor housing. You will see a high-voltage spark jump across the gap as the capacitor discharges.
- 4). Undo the screw securing the capacitor retaining clip with the screwdriver. Move the capacitor to one side to reveal the end of the motor shaft. Place an open-end wrench over the square lug on the end of the motor shaft. Wedge the side of the wrench against the cover housing post to prevent the impeller from turning.
- 5). Lay the pump on its side and slide the white nylon ring off the impeller shaft. Grip the shaft with a large pair of channel pliers. Steady the pump with one hand. Apply quick downward counterclockwise force on the channel pliers with the other hand to loosen the threads. Spin the impeller counterclockwise off the shaft.
- 6). Separate the pump motor from the impeller seal housing flange by gently twisting the two halves apart. You are now ready to install a new impeller seal and reassemble the pump.
