It's gotten so I don't even want to look at the newspaper anymore.
It seems like every page has some story about criminal violence on an innocent victim.
Most people aren't thinking about personal security until something happens to open their eyes to the problems around them.
Just this week, my local newspaper confirmed that the crime rate is up 8.
3% and attributed it to the poor economy.
I'm sure that most cities big and small are having the same problems.
When people can't earn money, they find other ways to get it- and those are mostly illegal ways.
One elderly lady had her purse snatched in the grocery store parking lot.
If she'd had a personal security alarm or electronic whistle, perhaps she could have drawn attention to the situation.
Most criminals when confronted by 120dB's will usually abandon the crime and seek refuge before they are caught by law enforcement.
I'm actually afraid to carry a purse or handbag at all anymore.
I may be able to see in front of me but I still haven't grown eyes in back of my head! It is so easy for a well-trained robber to sneak up from behind, snatch the handbag and be on his way with money, checkbook, credit cards, ID, etc.
Then there was the story about a young girl who was brutally raped.
She survived the attack, but is now severely brain injured and cannot see or speak and it is questionable as to just what this young lady understands according to the news report.
Again, had she been prepared with a personal security device, would the outcome have been the same? We can only surmise, but perhaps a spray of pepper spray could have given this young woman enough time to get to her car and get away.
Maybe a handheld stun gun in her pocket could have disable her attacker allowing her again to get away to safety.
I guess we'll never know.
What we do know is that these types of crimes are going on all around us and are occurring at an increasing rate.
It upsets me that so many people say, that's a good idea or I need to get some pepper spray for my teenage daughter, but never do.
Talk is one thing, but taking action is a whole different thing.
No one can say the next victim could be you or a family member.
Victims are sought out at random and when the situation is right, the assailant moves in on the attack.
Having a personal security device or even better, more than one type could mean the difference between life and death.
I hope I never see your story on the front pages of the newspaper.
I wish there was only happy news to report, but lately, that certainly has not been the case.
As I said, the crime rate is up.
What we need now is to increase the personal security rate.
What is your score? Is your personal security score high enough to handle an attack if it occurred? Or are you like the innocent victims above who were at the mercy of their assailants.
I hope my writing reaches even a few people who listen and take heed.
Every one deserves to live securely and with peace of mind.
Make a decision today to improve your personal security score and that of your family members.
