How to Put a Halter on After Catching the Horse

    • 1). Unbuckle the halter and attach the lead rope.

    • 2). Approach the horse from the front, walking toward the horse's shoulder and speaking to it. Do not approach from directly in front or directly behind, as this may startle the horse and cause it to buck, kick, or run away.

    • 3). Stand on the left side. Pass the lead rope under the horse's neck with your left hand and grab it with your right hand over the top of its neck. Gather both ends of the lead rope in your right hand to keep the horse from wandering away as you put on the halter.

    • 4). Move both ends of the lead rope to your left hand. Grab both sides of the halter near the noseband. Slide the noseband around your horse's nose.

    • 5). Bring the halter strap over the horse's head just behind its ears. Fasten the buckle while still holding the lead rope.

    • 6). Remove the lead rope from around the horse's neck, and begin leading the horse.
