- Swallowing a small amount of isopropyl alcohol is unlikely to cause serious injury, but if ingested in large amounts the effects may include drowsiness, gastrointestinal pain, unconsciousness, cramps, vomiting, nausea, diarrhea and sometimes even death. A lethal dose for an adult is about eight ounces.
- Seeking medical attention immediately and/or calling poison control is advised as treatment. Water or milk can be ingested to dilute the alcohol and coat the stomach, but shouldn't be given to a person who is unconscious, vomiting or otherwise having trouble swallowing.
- Recovery depends on the amount of alcohol ingested, and how quickly treatment was received. Unless massive amounts were ingested and treatment was delayed for a long time, a person is likely to make a full recovery and no permanent damage should be sustained.
