The printer and copier industry in Africa as a whole and South Africa in particular is getting very competitive year after year. The competition has become fiercer due to the demand for printers and copiers for business offices springing up all over the place.
Frankly, the business environment is growing in South Africa, so different brands such as Xerox, Konica Minolta, Canon, HP, Epson, Asante etc. have found their home here. Fortunately, some of them are doing very well, but others seem to be fading away as the competition gets more fierce.
There is no doubt that xerox South Africa is one of the respected brands in the printer and copier industry. They have managed to translate their winning ways to Africa, especially South Africa. According to research by www.telegraph.co.uk, Xerox was among the top ten printer brands in the world.
Other brands on the top ten list included Canon, Panasonic, Hewlett Packard, Kyocera, Lexmark, Epson, Toshiba, Samsung and Dell. I am sure that you are not surprised about the list at all, given their popularity on the market. I must say however that I was a bit surprised to see Dell in the top ten list mainly because most of us know the brand to be associated with PCs. Â
Well, Mr. Dell will definitely be happy with the list. It is a plus to the company and I hope they tap more into the markets in Africa. Don't get me wrong. Dell is a popular brand in Africa, but I am yet to see someone using a Dell printer in an office.
Toshiba was also a bit of a surprise because of the same reason I gave about Dell.
Another surprise is that I did not find Bizhub on the list. It is one of the trusted brands in South Africa apart from Xerox. They have many dealerships spread around the country, providing printing solutions to some of the biggest companies in the country. Another brand conspicously missing was Sharp, though a relatively new brand on the market yet with reputable quality printer and copier products - see here.
I will be monitoring in the next few months to see which brands gets on top and which ones fall out of grace. That will be quiet interesting to know. Anyway, let me know which printer or copier you are currently using and whether you think it is worthy of a top ten spot.
