- 1). Prepare the soil in the fall, between September and November, before the ground freezes. Loosen the soil in the area where you will be planting your bulbs and add a slow-release fertilizer. Mix some peat or compost into heavy clay soil.
- 2). Plant bulbs as early in the fall as possible to allow for some root growth before the Alberta winter sets in. Plant anywhere in your garden, as spring flowering bulbs have no special light requirements.
- 3). Dig a round hole, using your trowel or bulb-planting tool. Make each hole 4 inches deep for small bulbs, such as crocuses and anemones. Make each hole 8 inches deep for larger tulip, daffodil and hyacinth bulbs. Place the bulb into the bottom of the hole with the flat side down. Fill the hole with soil.
- 4). Water the newly planted bulbs. Continue to water regularly if there is not enough rainfall to keep the soil moist.
- 5). Cover the newly planted area with about 4 inches of mulch to protect from the harsh Alberta winters. Either leaves or straw will work well, preventing the ground from the freezing and thawing cycle common in Alberta.
