- 1). Fill the pH testing kit cup with pool water to the level indicated. Dip the testing strip in the water for the amount of time specified in the instructions that accompany the pH testing kit. Remove the strip and compare its coloring to the chart provided with the kit.
- 2). Write down the level of the pH in the pool as indicated by the test. Write down the amount of chlorine per gallon needed, as directed in the instructions, to bring the level of the water's pH to an acceptable number.
- 3). Write down the total number of gallons of water in the pool -- you can acquire this number from the manual or booklet accompanying the pool. Multiply the chlorine needed per gallon by the number of gallons of water. Write this number down.
- 4). Purchase the needed amount of chlorine stabilizer product for the pool. Upend the bag of chlorine stabilizer over the pool. Slowly begin to pour from the bag's contents into the pool as you move around the perimeter. Continue to pour and move around the perimeter of the pool until you've poured the required amount o chlorine stabilizer into the pool according to the figure you arrived at in Step 3.
- 5). Stir the water in the pool with a pool skimmer brush -- this will also let you remove any floating contaminants from the surface of the water. Continue to do this for five to six minutes before putting the skimmer brush away. Let the pool sit undisturbed for a day before using it.
