- 1). Prepare the planting area by removing all weeds from within a 3-foot radius.
- 2). Loosen the soil to a depth of 10 inches with a spade or garden fork.
- 3). Add 3 inches of rotted manure or compost to the soil and blend it into the top 6 inches. Smooth the area with a rake.
- 4). Plant the paw paw seed 1 inch deep. Water the seed until the top 3 inches of soil is moist -- and keep it moist until two weeks before the first frost. The paw paw will germinate in late summer.
