Well, there are many starving artist, starving writers, and folks that have hobbies who are just trying to make enough to get by so they can do what they love.
Interestingly enough, every town has a good number of folks who are creative geniuses, and when you pool their resources together, often you have incredible synergy.
This is why I often recommend when towns are looking to increase value, generate tourism, and help those small solo businesses working out of their home that they set up an arts and entertainment networking group.
Okay so let's talk about that for a second shall we? Not long ago I was talking to the president of a local Chamber of Commerce in our area and the chairman of the board.
Their little town has a number of artists, writers, and entertainers.
Of course, most of them spend a good deal of their time doing what they love and what they do best.
Unfortunately, they don't have very much time to market their wares.
Yes, nowadays everyone has a website, but with all the social networking many of those websites don't get much traffic.
There are many things you can do to increase traffic online to your small artistic business, but networking in the real world with real referrals works wonders.
You'd be surprised to find out that many chambers of commerce are willing to set up street fairs, art shows, book clubs, and anything else that will help the small business people make more money.
All they ask is each member join the Chamber of Commerce.
If you are an artist or an author you might even set up one of these networking groups through your local chamber, if they don't already have one.
Chambers often do events and they coordinate this with other civic organizations and City Hall.
Being able to get in on the ground floor of a local authors symposium or an art show is a great way to get your foot in the door to more sales.
It also helps the chamber to new members, and shows they support the local community and the smallest of businesses.
It's a great way to unite the town, show that the town has personality, and make sure that the creative geniuses of our time, yes in your own town, are making a good living doing what they love.
What could be better than that? Indeed I hope you will please consider all this and think on it.
