Weight Gain During Fertility Treatment

Infertility is a troubling problem for many couples trying to get pregnant.
Whatever the reason, it can lead to a good deal of stress and for some a few sleepless nights.
It's not surprising then that many seek treatment or procedures designed to help them become pregnant.
Depending on the cause of infertility, any number of treatments or procedures may be recommended by a fertility specialist.
It's important to speak with a specialist to help determine the cause of the problem so that treatment is appropriate.
For some, treatment may have a somewhat unexpected side effect.
Some women may notice that they gain weight when taking fertility medication.
Hormone treatment is fairly common for women experiencing infertility, even those who choose in vitro fertilization or other assisted reproductive technologies.
Before the procedures are performed, many take fertility medicine to help stimulate the ovaries to produce eggs for use during the procedure.
With increased estrogen levels while taking fertility treatment, women may experience water retention, weight gain and other side effects such as breast tenderness, nausea, moodiness, diarrhea, fatigue or headache.
Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is another potential risk of which patients should be aware.
This occurs when estrogen levels increase too much, causing the ovaries to produce too many eggs.
This condition requires immediate care and hospitalization.
Of course, weight gain is to be expected during pregnancy.
That's a given and shouldn't surprise anybody.
So how do you lose the weight after you're done with fertility treatments and pregnancy? It's important that you lose the weight in a healthy manner and avoid crash diet plans that promise quick weight loss.
Eating right, exercising and having a little bit of patience can go a long way in shedding those excess pounds gained during fertility treatment and/or pregnancy.
Eat healthy foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean meats rather than junk food.
Try to eat smaller portions rather than skipping meals, and make your snack a fruit or vegetable instead of chips or cookies.
What's more, don't eat just to eat.
Eat when you normally would or if you're hungry between meals, grab a fruit to snack on until it's time to eat again.
You may also work walking into your daily routine.
Take the baby along in a stroller (use a jogging stroller designed for carrying infants if you're into jogging) if you can't find somebody to watch him or her while you're exercising.
