- 1). Review basic knitting techniques for casting on stitches, working the knit stitch and binding off, if you are a beginner knitter.
- 2). Cast on approximately 15 to 20 stitches to start the flat, center portion of the scarf, which should measure 3 inches to 4 inches across.
- 3). Knit each stitch in every row until the knitted fabric is the length you want for your scarf. A typical scarf measures between 36 inches and 60 inches long.
- 4). Bind off stitches until one stitch remains on the right-hand needle. Do not bind off this stitch.
- 1). Rotate your fabric so that long edge of the scarf closest to the needle faces upward, with your right-hand knitting needle holding the last stitch in the right-hand corner.
- 2). Pick up a new stitch in every row across the long edge by inserting the right-hand needle under the horizontal strand at end of a row. Wrap the yarn around the needle once and pull a loop through the fabric, keeping this new loop on the needle.
- 3). Place the needle containing the new stitches in your left hand when you reach the end of the scarf and you are ready to begin knitting the ruffle.
- 4). Increase in every stitch across the row by knitting into the front loop and then the back loop of each stitch across. This forms a knit front and back (Kfb) increase and allows you to create two stitches for every one stitch in the row.
- 5). Repeat Step 4 to increase every stitch across the row again so that you quadruple the number of starting stitches.
- 6). Knit every stitch in every row until the ruffle measures approximately 2 inches, or the width you want for your scarf.
- 7). Bind off all stitches on the ruffle.
- 8). Repeat Steps 2 to 7 to add a ruffled edge to the opposite side of the scarf.
