- 1). Contact the home's existing insurance provider. The company that provides home insurance will have a policy for the home on file. A company representative will be able to quickly tell you what coverage the garage has, if any. If the garage is not insured, additional insurance can be purchased.
- 2). Catalog all the items in the garage and note either their new or replacement value (ideally both). The insurance company will need a list of items that will be insured in the garage. Vehicles may be covered under a separate policy. Check with the vehicle's insurer. Take photos of all the items in the garage that will be insured, as well as the garage itself and store them in a safe place, preferably away from the property. If a claim is made, the more evidence of items in the garage, the better the chance of making a successful claim.
- 3). Purchase a policy for the garage. This will likely be in the form of a "rider" or "contents" policy on the existing home insurance policy. The premium will be based on the value of the goods housed in the garage as well as the garage itself. It will also be dependent on the types of coverage such as fire, theft, natural disasters.
