Video: How to Cook Lentils Till They Are Soft

Hi, this is registered dietitian Vandana Sheth. Today I'm gonna show you how to make lentils, how to cook them so they are really soft. Now lentils come in many different types, in different colors, different shapes. They come in red lentils, they come in these kind of dark green lentils, so I'm gonna use these dark green lentils, and depending on the kinds of lentils you use, it take anywhere from 25 minutes to about an hour to cook. The benefit of lentils is that they are powerful, they're high in protein, they're high in fiber, vitamins and minerals, and they don't need any soaking beforehand. Make sure you do wash them and rinse them thoroughly. So this is about 1 cup of lentils. And I'm gonna add about 2 cups of water, and we're gonna put it in a pot like this. And this is about 2 cups of water. You can add a few cloves to add some nice aroma to the lentils, as well as a bay leaf. And we're gonna put this on the stove on high heat and bring it to a boil. And this should take a few minutes, but once it comes to a boil, make sure you put the lid on, partially cover it, and let it cook for about 15 to 20 minutes. Now that it's been about 20 or 25 minutes, the lentils look just about done. So here they are. Lentils, perfectly cooked. You can season them however you choose with some salt, pepper, paprika, cumin, garlic, use them in stews, soups, salads, be creative. So here you have it, lentils, how to cook some so they're soft, this is registered dietitian Vandana Sheth.
