- 1). Turn the tuning knobs counter-clockwise to loosen the strings on the guitar. Cut the strings near the bridge of the guitar using a pair of wire cutters.
- 2). Pull out the end pins from the bottom of the bridge on the 12-string guitar with a pair of pliers. Remove the ends of the strings from the hole and from the tuning knob.
- 3). String on a new string to the guitar. Insert the grommet on the end of the string into the hole near the saddle and push the end pin back into the hole to secure the end of the string. Take the other end of the string and insert it through the hole of the tuning knob. Allow some slack to the string to allow room for tuning. Place your hand between the string and the fretboard to account for slack and bend the part of the string that sticks out the other side of the tuning knob.
- 4). Turn the tuning knob clockwise to tighten the string until the string vibrates evenly. Repeat these steps until all the strings have been put on and lightly tightened.
- 5). Tune the strings to the correct chromatic tuning using a chromatic tuner. Adjust the tuning knob left or right to match the tuning dial on the chromatic tuner.
- 6). Remove the excess string at the end of the tuning knobs by cutting the string with a pair of wire cutters.
