Skin Problems in the Elderly
The proportion of elderly individuals in the general population continues to increase. It is thus important to recognize and manage skin problems in the elderly, as well as understand the underlying histology and predisposing factors. In this article, the clinical and histologic manifestations of intrinsic aging and photoaging are discussed. Wound healing in elderly skin, as well as common skin conditions, particularly those that may predispose to skin ulceration, are also reviewed.
The elderly continue to constitute an increasing proportion of the general population. By the year 2025, 20 percent of the United States population is expected to be 65 years or older. It is thus important to recognize and appropriately address skin problems in the elderly. In this article, we will briefly review the clinical and histologic manifestations of skin aging, wound healing in the elderly, and skin conditions more commonly seen in this population, particularly those that predispose to ulceration.
