- 1). Locate your sky marks and the constellation on a star map for your latitude. For December, the constellations below the circumpolar circle of stars will be visible. Draw a line form the South Pole, between the Magellanic Clouds to the horizon. As you cross the circumpolar circle you will be in the constellation Eridanus. Positioned in the pocket of Eridanus is Fornax or The Furnace.
- 2). Find the South Pole in the night sky. Draw your imaginary line between the Clouds and on towards the horizon until you enter Eridanus. When the line of stars that form the start of the constellation turn parallel to the horizon continue going straight and find The Furnace.
- 3). Use the binoculars to view the sky in between the two halves of Eridanus. The constellation of Fornax is dim and the brightest star has a magnitude of 4.48. There are many deep space objects to view in this region, mostly galaxies.
