- 1). Purchase a new thermostat, gasket sealant and gasket from your local auto parts store. Be sure to match the thermostat to your car's exact make and model.
- 2). Open the hood of your car, and then locate and remove the radiator cap. One visual sign of this cap, is that it may read "do not open while engine is hot" (it is, in fact, essential never to remove the cap when the engine is running or hot). Use a thick towel or rag while removing the radiator cap to avoid getting burned by the heat of the cap.
- 3). Locate the thermostat by following the two 2-inch black hoses extending out of the radiator until you have found a black cover that is secured in place by two bolts.
- 4). Remove the hoses from the thermostat cover by using either a flat-head or Phillips-head screwdriver to loosen the hose clamps where the hose connects to the thermostat cover. Then remove the two bolts from the thermostat cover with a socket wrench. Lift the thermostat cover off the engine, and then lift the thermostat out of the engine.
- 5). Use a putty knife or utility knife to scrap off the old gasket remains from the engine. Place the new thermostat inside the engine, and then place the thermostat gasket in place of the old gasket. Align the holes on the gasket with the holes on the engine. Replace the thermostat cover, and reconnect the radiator hoses to the thermostat.
