- 1). Contact the manufacturer of the car you wish to import by email, and tell them you wish to import one of their new vehicles. Save all correspondence with the manufacturer.
- 2). Wire the deposit for the car to the manufacturer which confirms you agree to purchase the car. This deposit may include the shipping fee. Ask the manufacturer to send you a bill of sale by express airmail.
- 3). Wire the remaining balance for the car to the manufacturer once you have received confirmation from the shipping company that the car has boarded the ship. Ask the shipping company for the car's arrival date so it can be cleared by Customs.
- 4). Submit all legal documents associated with the car to Customs upon the car's arrival. This includes the shipping company's bill of lading, the bill of sale sent to you by the manufacturer, a 3520-1 form from the Environmental Protection Agency and a HS-7 form from the Department of Transportation. Since the car is new, you needn't worry about the federal "gas-guzzler" tax. Pay the import duty to the Customs office which is generally 2.5% of the vehicle's value.
- 5). Purchase car insurance, and register the vehicle so you can legally drive it home.
